PLANO, Texas – Plans to turn the old Collin Creek Mall in Plano into a mixed-use development won preliminary approval Monday night.
The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission approved a zoning change request from the developer. A company called American Centurion wants to demolish the mall’s existing anchor stores but keep other parts of the building.
The proposal calls for new shops, stores, restaurants and a variety of other neighborhood businesses including a grocery store.
There are also plans to add 3,100 residential units – mostly apartments and townhomes with a few single family homes – as well as offices, restaurants and a hotel building.
Monday night’s commission voted unanimously in favor of the project. The mall that opened more than 35 years ago was once a hot spot in Plano. Now it’s more like a graveyard.
“I think I might be the only private citizen that doesn’t have an economical concern in this that’s speaking. And I think it’s really, really important that we develop the east side. That entire 75 corridor is really important to the city and this is a no brainer with what the developer said. So please support it,” one Plano resident told the commission.
The Plano City Council is expected to consider the billion-dollar redevelopment sometime during the next several weeks.
American Centurion hopes to break ground on the project sometime this summer.
